Visa New Zealand Inbound Spend Report 2017

Supporting tourism is a key part of Visa’s business. As the world’s leading digital payments network, we enable cross-border payments that are fast, convenient and secure. In 2017, international Visa cardholders contributed more than $3.4 billion to the New Zealand economy.

We are fortunate that the digital payments network that enables these international payments, VisaNet, also provides us with anonymised data on the spend patterns of international visitors – insights that can be used to inform and educate New Zealand businesses.

Merchant Contactless Study

Thriving New Zealand businesses know that outstanding customer experience is at the heart of their success, and contactless and mobile technology is part of the experience that customers are demanding now. The Merchant Contactless Study, undertaken by Visa in conjunction with Paymark and independent data analytics and research house TRA, quantifies how merchants can benefit from innovative payments technology that is enabled by contactless.

Economic Impact Study

Moody’s Analytics has completed a study to analyse the impact of electronic payments on economic growth across 70 countries that makes up almost 95% of global GDP. The study found that electronic payments contributed $296 billion (USD) to GDP across the countries studies over a 5 year span – 2011 to 2015. The increased use of electronic payment products also created job opportunities and was a major contributor to consumption and increased production.
